HISTORICAL REVIEW OF THE FOUNDATION
The Foundation was incorporated within the state of Florida on September 18, 1979, and received designation as a 501(c)(3)
tax-exempt organization under United States Internal Revenue Code on June 12, 1984. Original officers and incorporators consisted of Sarasota County School Board members and the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent of the District Schools.
In the closing months of 1988, a group of Sarasota citizens composed of business persons and District educators met to discuss current issues surrounding public education and the need to resurrect the Sarasota Public Schools Foundation, Inc., which was virtually dormant since inception in 1979. Recognizing the need to more succinctly address programmatic and fiscal needs within the District Schools as well as the need to resurrect and restructure the Foundation to encompass a greater cross section of county residents, a small task force was created.
On November 21, 1988, a newly elected set of Foundation Board of Directors assumed office. In August 1998, the Executive Board filed a restatement of the Articles of Incorporation to officially change the legal name to the "Education Foundation of Sarasota County, Inc."
Since its reorganization in 1988 through June 30, 2001, the Education Foundation has provided more than
$4 million of direct fiscal support to Sarasota County District Schools.
The future of the Foundation and that of Sarasota District Schools is vested with the citizens, business, and friends of public education. Their efforts collectively form the "Edge of Excellence," a Sarasota County tradition, in which all can take immense pride.
Quality education concerns everyone.
It nurtures our children, strengthens our community, supplies our
businesses with competent employees,
attracts positive growth, and serves our future by developing strong
leaders.
