The Education Foundation awards Edge of Excellence Classroom Grants to creative teachers who develop innovative curriculum-based projects that kindle student imagination and ignite enthusiasm for learning. The grant is named for the sponsor or the sponsor's business, organization or honored loved one. The sponsor awards the grant to the teacher at a gala reception and may visit the classroom to see the grant implemented. Contact the Education Foundation today to learn how you can sponsor a grant and directly impact children in the classroom. You may sponsor one or more Edge of Excellence grants at $500 each.

3 Help a middle school host an African delegation. The delegation of twenty-one visitors will include students, teachers and officials from Ghana's Ministry of Education. Your help is needed for food and transportation during their ten-day visit to our community in October. Plans are still being developed. Please call the Education Foundation for updates and inquiries. Any amount is welcome and appreciated.

4 Help provide computers to elementary students whose families can't afford to purchase them. A computer expert donates his time and expertise to recycle and refurbish donated home computers and printers, set them up in the students' homes and teach them and their families how to use them. Donations will buy software, printers, replacement parts, etc. Any amount is welcome and appreciated. Don't throw away your old printer or usable ink cartridges! If you've bought a new printer lately please donate your old working printer and unused ink cartridges to the Education Foundation. They will be given to needy students for use with recycled computers. There is always a need for ink cartridges.

5 Send 140 Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) cadets on a Fieldtrip or to a Drill
meet or Competition.
...more about this wish
The purpose of the JROTC is to motivate young people to be better citizens. The experiences that JROTC offers prepares them for successful military or civilian lives. Many go on to careers in the military. Some receive full-tuition scholarships. Some of the cadets are severely handicapped and could never enter the military. Others have their goals set on civilian careers. To gain skill and experience, the cadets must compete in drill meets and physical fitness competitions throughout the state and participate in camping expeditions and military training. Entry fees for meets averages $150 per event. The JROTC's biggest expense in transportation. The school district charges $1.40 a mile for a school bus. Cadets must earn their own money for these trips through donations and fund-raisers.
A partial list of upcoming events is listed below with estimated mileage: 25 July- Local Summer Camp 85 miles All of the JROTC trips are designed to be enjoyable and educational. Some teach land navigation skills. All trips teach teamwork. At the Drill Meets, the team competes against other JROTC's in marching team and individual competitions. Drill and Ceremonies is an important military skill and teaches discipline. Raider Challenge and Swat Team Challenge are hard physical competitions that feature road marches with 30 pound packs, map and compass events, building rope bridges, first aid contests, canoe races, and a physical fitness contest with a 2 mile run, push-ups and sit-ups. All events give cadets an opportunity to succeed, win trophies and feel proud of themselves.
6 Sponsor a Junior/Senior prom for a special group of students.
...more about this wish
The Cyesis program for teen parents helps them achieve academically, increase self-esteem, make healthy decisions, prepare for high-quality employment, and understand the impact of parenting on her/his child's development. Students to date: 110     Babies to date:  93
The students who attend Cyesis do not have another districted school, so the only opportunity they have to attend this rite of passage (prom) is through our program.  The majority of our students have not been exposed to this type of social setting.  Over 83% of these students qualify for free and reduced lunch, and, therefore, do not have the opportunity to experience the culture of eating out at a nice restaurant.  This is a stumbling block when they are employed and attend workshops and conferences as well as other work-related events. Students are instructed in restaurant etiquette prior to this event.  They learn about reply cards and appropriate responses and become familiar with meal selections.  Proper attire and grooming is reviewed.  Transportation and babysitting issues are addressed. The students make their own prom decorations, using a variety of math and artistic skills.  They learn how to work within a tight budget, and work together as a team to create a memorable event. You can sponsor the entire event or any of the following estimated expenses:    Gifts for participants $  550.00 Disk jockey $  600.00 Materials for decorations $  300.00 Consumables $  200.00   (paper & ink for invitations) Photographer $  250.00 TOTAL NEEDED: $1900.00
7 Host a Mother's Day Breakfast for teen parents in a special program.  To promote positive
parenting and to strengthen the mother-child bond (including the bond between the teen students
and their mother or significant female figure), the Cyesis program celebrates Mother's Day with a
continental breakfast and special program for the students and one guest.  The student council plans
this event and tries to raise money to offset the costs.  A special program is offered during the
morning featuring poetry readings by the students, music by the transition babies (3-4 year olds),
and a tour of the childcare facilities.  This annual event is well attended by families in the program.

Expenses: Paper goods	$100.00
			Invitations	$100.00
			Food $250.00

8 Underwrite a yearbook for students with special needs. These students use many skills in
the areas of technology, math, teamwork, prioritizing, goal setting, and meeting deadlines, to create
their yearbook.  They have searched the United States to find a printer who will work with them on
keeping prices at a minimum.  They have found one corporation that will give them a special rate
based on their Title 1 school status (a school with more than 80% that fall within federal poverty
guidelines.)

	Offset production costs	$500.00

9 Provide basic Classroom Libraries for students with multiple learning disabilities at a middle
school with a large diverse, low-socio-economic population. The library will support a guided reading
program led by the teacher and encourage these struggling readers to do independent reading.
$1,500 per library. Eight classrooms that serve these children need such a library.
10 Provide Amplification Systems for elementary school classrooms (kindergarten through
third grade) that help children with hearing and learning  impairments to hear better and pay more
attention to the teacher. $750 - $1,200 per unit.
